Alcaraz defeated Sinner in an epic French Open final, making an incredible comeback to retain his title

Carlos Alcaraz staged a stunning comeback to defeat Jannik Sinner in a historic French Open final, becoming the eighth man in the Open era to win back-to-back titles at Roland Garros.

The 22-year-old Spaniard saved three championship points and recovered from two sets down to win 4-6, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (10-2) in a marathon contest lasting five hours and 29 minutes – the longest final in French Open history.

In a thrilling showdown between the ATP Tour’s top two players, Alcaraz displayed extraordinary grit and flair to clinch his fifth Grand Slam title. His decisive moment came with a blistering forehand winner in the final-set tie-break, before collapsing in celebration.

Hailing from southern Spain’s Murcia, Alcaraz is set to open his own tennis centre in his native city in 2026.

Sinner, 23, was denied a maiden French Open title in only his second tournament since serving a three-month doping ban. Despite playing superb tennis throughout the fortnight, his serve faltered under pressure, and Alcaraz capitalised.

Their gripping battle confirmed the strength of their growing rivalry and promises more classics ahead. “It is a privilege to share a court with you,” Alcaraz told Sinner after an unforgettable final that may mark the beginning of a new golden era in men’s tennis.

On the same day, Spain’s national football team lost to Portugal in the final of the UEFA Nations League.
