Cartagena's waterfront is getting a major electrical upgrade, and it is about much more than just the wiring
The Port Authority is investing nearly €850,000 to modernise ageing infrastructure and prepare the seafront for future growth
If you have walked along Cartagena's Paseo Alfonso XII recently, you will have seen a waterfront that is very much in the middle of reinventing itself. New commercial spaces, cruise activity, urban investment: the area has become one of the most dynamic parts of the city. The trouble is that the electrical infrastructure running beneath it all dates back decades, and it has been struggling to keep pace. That is about to change. The Port Authority of Cartagena has approved an investment of €849,584 to completely overhaul the electricity supply along the waterfront, replacing what the project's own technical report describes as obsolete systems that no longer meet modern standards. The ageing Lonja transformer substation, which has been operating well past its natural lifespan, is among the facilities due for a serious upgrade.
The work will see a brand new transformer substation built, to be known as Mare Nostrum or CT Náutico, sitting alongside a modernised version of the existing Lonja substation. The two will be connected by a new underground high-voltage power line, installed during the first of two construction phases. The whole project must be completed within twelve months, with the cabling and conduit work finished within the first six.
But the really interesting part is what the project is quietly preparing for. An underground conduit will be extended towards the Héroes de Cavite building, creating capacity for future electrical services, telecommunications and other infrastructure that the port area will need as it continues to grow. This is not just a repair job. It is the Port Authority laying the groundwork for whatever comes next along one of Cartagena's most important stretches of coastline.
It might not be the most glamorous announcement of the year, but for anyone who has watched this waterfront transform over the past decade, it is the kind of investment that makes everything else possible.
