DANA Adam leaves three dead in Valencia and Alicante
The lockdown has been lifted in most of the 145 affected municipalities, although rescues continue in eight towns
Torrential rain from DANA Adam has left three people dead in the Valencian Community and forced the temporary lockdown of up to 145 municipalities across Valencia and Alicante. The restrictions were lifted in most areas on Monday October 19 as conditions began to improve. However, eight towns remained under stay-at-home orders while emergency teams continued rescuing people and pumping water from flooded homes and roads.
The municipalities still under lockdown were Bellreguard, Oliva, Daimús, Piles and Miramar on Valencia’s southern coast, and Xàbia, Pego and Els Poblets on Alicante’s northern coast.

Emergency services have handled more than 1,000 incidents since the episode began on Saturday. Many involved people trapped in flooded cars, basements and homes, as well as problems on roads and railways.
In Oliva, rescuers found the body of a woman in the basement of her home. Her niece was found alive beside her. A 64-year-old man also died after suffering a heart attack at a campsite in the town.
The third death occurred in Sagunto, where a woman entered the sea during the storm and later disappeared. Her body was found on the beach at Canet d’En Berenguer.
The Marina Alta area of Alicante was among the worst affected. The Provincial Fire Consortium received almost 400 calls for assistance overnight and carried out 65 interventions.
Firefighters rescued people from rooftops and vehicles, while a rescue helicopter was deployed to reach areas that could not be reached by road (Alicante firefighters article). More than 50 personnel and almost all the Consortium’s fire stations were involved in the operation.
Pego and Xàbia recorded the highest number of interventions, with 31 and 25 respectively. Firefighters also evacuated 64 people from Camping Naranjal in Xàbia at around 12.24am. They were taken to a multipurpose hall in the town, and no injuries were reported.
The Girona river overflowed in Els Poblets, leaving nearby areas flooded and cars swept away by the force of the water. The town’s mayor, José Luis Mas, described the situation as “chaotic”, although he said there had been only material damage to vehicles and businesses.
Schools were closed for more than 102,000 students across the Valencian Community, including 80,913 in Valencia province and 21,868 in Alicante province.
The Generalitat had ordered the temporary lockdown of 145 municipalities along the southern coast of Valencia and the northern coast of Alicante. The measure was intended to reduce risks while the heaviest rain fell and rescue operations were under way.
Valencian Emergencies Minister Juan Carlos Valderrama said the decision to keep the restrictions in eight towns was made after speaking directly with their mayors. He said the measure would be reviewed as conditions developed in each locality.
