The ‘little jewel in the crown’ of Murcian architecture is to be restored

The Ermita del Salitre church in Murcia city opened its doors this Wednesday October 9, after being closed for half a century to prepare for its restoration and conservation. Technicians have already begun the inspection work of the building in its current state in order to discover the level of restoration and conservation work needed for the project.

Located in the heart of Murcia’s capital, nestled between Calle Acisclo Díaz and Calle Pasos de Santiago, this historic hermitage has been abandoned for decades. The wall that once covered the chapel, also known as the Chapel of the Via Crucis, dating from the 18th century, has now been demolished, allowing the chapel to once again see the light of day.

The chapel is the only hermitage of the stations of cross that currently exists in Murcia, allowing the chapel the highest degree of protection. The hermitage consists of three parts: an entrance door, a small nave with a gabled roof and the apse. The building represents one of the best examples of Baroque style architecture that exists in the municipality.

The Mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, stated that the works “represent the beginning of a comprehensive rehabilitation project and the restoration of the building, which will allow Murcia to return a symbol of identity”.

Once the initial inspection work is completed, the chapel will once again be closed until the rehabilitation begins and the definitive opening follows. According to the Deputy Mayor and Councillor for Development and Heritage, Rebeca Pérez , the works will begin, approximately, during the first half of 2025.
