February 28 Orihuela Costa Carnival returns to Playa Flamenca

This Saturday's free street festival promises parades, live music and a whole lot of colour

Playa Flamenca is getting dressed up this Saturday February 28 as the Orihuela Costa Carnival rolls back into town for its third year running, and by all accounts it's shaping up to be the biggest one yet.

Organised by the Comisión de Fiestas Orihuela Costa alongside Orihuela Town Hall and the Asociación Costa Orihuela Cultural, and backed by a wide range of local businesses, the event has grown into one of the most anticipated days in the area's calendar.

The whole thing kicks off at midday with food, drinks and live music setting the tone, so there's plenty of reason to arrive early and soak it all in before the main event.

That highlight of the day is the parade, which gets going at 5pm and sets off from the roundabout at the junction of Calle Nicolás de Bussi and Calle Pintor Ribera, heading in the direction of CEIP Los Dolses school. Dancing troupes in elaborate, eye-catching costumes will take centre stage, with performers who have been rehearsing for months bringing a real mix of cultural influences to the streets.

For families, it's a brilliant day out. Younger ones will be well looked after with bouncy castles to burn off energy, and DJs keeping the atmosphere lively throughout means there's something to enjoy at every age. Coming hot on the heels of Torrevieja's own carnival parades, it's shaping up to be a fantastic few weeks of celebration along this stretch of the Costa Blanca.
