Flight from London to Spain diverted when smoke filled the cabin

The easyJet plane to Malaga was forced to divert to Madrid after a mid-flight emergency was declared

Passengers jetting off to the Costa del Sol from London Gatwick had a serious fright on Thursday January 23 when the cabin began filling up with smoke, forcing the pilot of the easyJet flight to make an emergency landing.

The Airbus A320-300, on route to Malaga, was nearing Madrid when the crew declared the emergency by squawking 7700. The airline announced that the issue was technical.

The A320 landed on runway 32L at Madrid Airport at 9.52am. Upon landing, the plane was met on the taxiway by fire trucks and moved to an isolated area away from other aircraft.

All of the passengers disembarked safely but easyJet decided to arrange a new plane for the second leg of the journey and not take any chances.

Meanwhile, several airlines have cancelled a significant number of flights scheduled to depart from and arrive at Dublin Airport on Friday morning, January 24, due to the expected impact of Storm Éowyn.

The storm was forecast to bring very strong winds to the Dublin region from the early hours of Friday morning through to around midday.

As of 07.45am, airlines had cancelled approximately 230 flights.

Winds in the Dublin area were gusting up to 56 knots this morning and airport authorities have warned passengers that further delays and cancellations are likely throughout the day.
