Greggs lands in Spain with first overseas bakery in almost 20 years
Brits flying home from Tenerife will soon be able to grab sausage rolls, steak bakes and even a Spanish-inspired twist

British holidaymakers heading home from Tenerife will soon be able to pick up a Greggs sausage roll before boarding their flight, after the bakery chain confirmed plans to open its very first store in Spain.
The new outlet is set to open later this month inside Tenerife South Airport, marking Greggs’ first international expansion since its brief move into Belgium almost two decades ago.
The bakery giant has teamed up with travel retailer Lagardère Travel Retail to launch the store in the airport’s departures area, where millions of British tourists pass through every year after holidays in the Canary Islands.
For many UK travellers, it could mean a welcome taste of home before getting on the plane.
Alongside Greggs favourites including sausage rolls, hot bakes, sandwiches and sweet treats, the Tenerife branch will also feature some local-inspired options, including a Spanish Omelette Roll created especially for the Spanish market.
Tenerife South Airport was chosen partly because of its huge British customer base. Around half of the airport’s 13 million annual passengers come from the UK, making it one of the busiest overseas hubs for British holidaymakers.
Greggs chief executive Roisin Currie said the opening was an important test for the company’s international ambitions.
“Tenerife South Airport is a hub for millions of UK and international passengers each year, making it the ideal location to test spreading our wings in an overseas setting,” she said.“It’s an exciting milestone for Greggs as we bring a slice of home to the Canaries, and we’re confident our great-value offering will resonate just as well under the Spanish sun as it does on the UK high street.”
Earlier this year, pub giant J D Wetherspoon opened its first ever Spanish outlet at Alicante-Elche Airport, aimed largely at British tourists flying from the Costa Blanca. Following strong early demand, the company is already preparing to open two more airport pubs at Barcelona-El Prat within the next year.
Lagardère Travel Retail Spain and Portugal CEO Javier Cagigal said Greggs was likely to prove popular with passengers looking for something familiar before flying home.
“We’re delighted to partner with Greggs to bring such a well-loved brand into Tenerife South Airport for the very first time,” he said.
“As passengers head home, this new opening gives them a familiar, comforting choice in departures – whether that’s a last treat, a relaxed sit-down moment or something to ease the journey home.”
An exact opening date for the new Greggs store has not yet been confirmed, but the bakery is expected to welcome its first customers before the summer holiday season gets fully underway.
