Illegal villa parties boom in Ibiza as local councils take a tough stand

Fines of up to €300,000 imposed to tackle unauthorised, profit-driven events disrupting communities

Ibiza’s local councils are stepping up efforts to combat the rise of illegal villa parties across the island, with fines reaching as high as €300,000 for those caught organising or profiting from these unauthorised events. The Ibiza and Formentera Tourist Accommodation Association stresses that illegal parties hurt both local residents and legitimate tourism businesses by creating noise disturbances, unfair competition, and damaging the island’s image.

In 2025, Sant Josep has seen 53 complaints related to noise and unlicensed activities, while Sant Joan, although currently free of incidents this year, has dealt with several Villa party cases in recent years. Santa Eulària has three ongoing investigations into private villa parties. One notable case in late July involved around 100 partygoers who paid €130 each for entry, complete with security and controlled access in a soundproofed villa near Cala Olivera.

These events, which charge admission without permits and evade taxes, have become a major challenge for coexistence on the island, especially during the tourist season. Authorities highlight how organisers now try to be discreet, holding gatherings in soundproofed, closed spaces to evade detection, but the profit-driven nature and community impact remain clear.

The problem is not new. During the pandemic, large illegal parties were busted in luxury villas with hundreds attending, paying high fees, and hiring international DJs without licenses. While the crowd has reduced, the issue continues to concern Ibiza’s authorities.

Local councils are determined to maintain pressure through police surveillance, cooperating institutions, and responding to neighbourhood complaints. They emphasise that safeguarding community harmony and supporting licensed businesses is essential for the island’s sustainability as a top international destination.

By cracking down on these unlicensed events, Ibiza hopes to protect its residents, uphold its nightlife sector’s reputation, and preserve the quality of life that draws visitors year after year.
