Injured sea turtle rescued from Torrevieja beach
Beach cleaners spotted the animal early Tuesday morning and alerted Torrevieja's environmental police
An injured sea turtle has been rescued from La Mata beach in Torrevieja after being found with a fishing line wrapped around its neck and a bag attached to its body.
The turtle was spotted by the beach cleaning service at around 5.30am on Tuesday September 22, prompting officers from Torrevieja Local Police's Administrative and Environmental Police unit to attend.
When they reached the animal, they found that the fishing line around its neck was also attached to a bag, restricting its movement in the water.
The officers managed to remove the bag after checking that doing so wouldn't put additional pressure on the turtle. However, they decided not to interfere with the knot around its neck as attempting to remove it could have caused further injury.
The appropriate wildlife protection protocol was then activated so the turtle could receive specialist care.
Staff from the Oceanogràfic subsequently took charge of the animal and transported it for veterinary assessment and treatment. Specialists will monitor its condition and support its recovery with the aim of eventually returning it to the sea.
The rescue involved Torrevieja's beach cleaning service, Local Police and specialist marine wildlife staff, highlighting the importance of quickly reporting injured or distressed marine animals found along the coast.
Fishing lines, hooks, plastic bags and other discarded items can pose a serious risk to marine wildlife, particularly turtles which can become tangled or ingest debris while searching for food.
