January 18 Torrevieja's famous International Pig Day returns to La Mata

Free pork, plenty of beer and a lively crowd at one of Vega Baja’s most chaotic food festivals

One of Torrevieja’s most loved and slightly bonkers food traditions is back this weekend, as International Pig Day returns to La Mata on Sunday January 18, 2026.

The event takes place in Plaza de Encarnación Pujol from around 12pm and if you have never been before, expect a noisy, smoky and very social afternoon rather than anything polished or organised. This is a proper Spanish fiesta where everyone piles in, food is shared freely and the atmosphere does most of the work.

More than 600kg of pork will be cooked and handed out, along with around 150kg of bread, celery, oranges and plenty of wine and beer. Local traders also donate hams and drinks, some of which are raffled off during the day.

Entry is completely free and there is no registration. You simply turn up, queue politely and collect your share.

One of the quirks of Pig Day is that everyone brings their own setup. Tables, chairs, barbecues, extra food and drinks are all welcome, and groups tend to settle in for the afternoon once they’ve claimed a spot. It’s messy, loud and great fun.

The festival is linked to San Antón celebrations across the Vega Baja and has grown into a truly international gathering. Alongside locals, you’ll find plenty of British, German and Scandinavian residents, all mixing in with visitors who know exactly what they are coming for.

If you’re looking for something refined, this is not it. If you fancy free food, a strong community vibe and a very Spanish take on winter celebrations, International Pig Day in La Mata is well worth experiencing at least once. Just don’t forget your appetite.
