July 8 Challenging hike to discover the hidden treasures of Murcia's coastline

Trek is not for the faint-hearted but beautiful wild coves await intrepid walkers

The Mazarrón Tourism Office has organised a challenging but very rewarding guided hike through the natural area of the Sierra de la Muela, Cabo Tiñoso and Roldán, in the neighbouring municipality of Cartagena.

It is free to take part and will be held on Tuesday July 8 at 6.30pm.

This circular route will take participants along the bottom of the Morra del Garabito ridge as far as the isolated and abandoned Guardia Civil station of Bolete, continuing through the coves of Cala Bolete chico and Cala Bolete grande, and returning along the beautiful Rambla de Bolete ravine.

The nature of the terrain is quite challenging so the route has been classified as medium to high difficulty, since there are some parts which may be tricky for people who are not accustomed to hiking.

The organisers also warn that there are a couple of points which may cause some people to experience vertigo.

The route is circular and covers a total distance of 11.5 kilometres, with an elevation gain of 402 metres.

It will take approximately four hours, depending on the fitness level of the participants or other circumstances which may arise.

Participants must have their own transport to arrive in and leave afterwards, and the route will finish at the same place it starts, where everyone can leave their vehicles. The location of this meeting point will be revealed to participants once they have registered in advance.

It is required to bring drinking water (at least one litre per person), enclosed footwear that is suitable for uneven ground (no sandals of any kind) and suitable clothing (check the weather forecast). It is also advisable to bring hiking or Nordic walking sticks.

No pets are allowed.

Any children or teenagers will have to be supervised by their parents, legal guardians or adult companions, who will be responsible for ensuring that they behave responsibly.

Neither Mazarrón council’s tourism department nor the hike guides will be responsible for any incidents provoked by participants who do not follow an ethical code of conduct.

Every participant must fill in an application form with their personal details, including a DNI, NIE or passport number, and must state if they are a legal minor.

No one can take part without registering in advance.

The hike may be cancelled if there is adverse weather.

Mazarrón Tourist Office

Mazarrón tourist office is located in the heart of Puerto de Mazarrón, in Plaza Toneleros, and offers a full range of leaflets about the area, bus timetables and of course handy town maps.

Although Mazarrón is a popular beach resort and is extremely busy during the summer as a result, it is also an area with a large residential population of expats, so there are always plenty of activities in English-speaking bars and restaurants and events taking place, both in town and on the nearby Camposol residential development. 

Another important urbanisation in the municipality is the Mazarrón Country Club.

Mazarrón has over 30 beaches to enjoy, including dog friendly beaches, plenty of good walking areas, a number of historical attractions including the Roman salted fish factory and a varied offering of sporting attractions including a golf course on the Camposol development.

The only days of the year on which the tourist office is scheduled to remain closed are Januar y1 and 6, June 13, November 17 and December 24, 25 and 31.
