Lorca's first ever Symphony Orchestra will make its debut with a New Year's concert
The long-awaited musical project comes to life with plans for regular concerts and youth engagement
Lorca has officially launched its first-ever Symphony Orchestra, a landmark achievement for the local arts scene.
This ensemble, composed of 50 professional musicians along with advanced students and alumni from the ‘Narciso Yepes’ Conservatorio Music School and other academies, will perform its inaugural New Year’s concert on January 2, 2025 at the Margarita Lozano Auditorium.
The city’s mayor, Fulgencio Gil, shared the announcement, expressing the pride and anticipation surrounding this milestone for Lorca’s musical community.
A musical journey decades in the making
This new orchestra represents the fulfilment of a vision many years in the making, one that aims to provide high-quality performances and a meaningful platform for musicians with local roots.
As Mayor Gil explained, this initiative will not only elevate Lorca’s cultural profile but also support aspiring artists, offering them valuable exposure and the chance to showcase their talent.
“This orchestra will bring visibility to Lorca’s potential as a musical hub, nurturing a space for emerging artists and strengthening our reputation as a centre of artistic growth and training,” he said.
Regular performances
The orchestra plans to host four major performances annually, one for each season, with flexibility to accept requests for additional chamber concerts. Weekly rehearsals take place at the Conservatorio, whose facilities have been made available for this purpose. The orchestra will feature a full range of instrument families, including strings, wind and percussion, ensuring a rich and versatile sound.
The debut concert on January 2 will showcase Lorca’s musical spirit with a mixed choir of students from local schools and community choirs joining the orchestra. Audiences can expect a celebratory programme filled with classics, Spanish-inspired compositions, popular soundtracks, and a festive selection of traditional waltzes, polkas and marches from the Strauss family.
With a focus on community and artistic development, Lorca’s Symphony Orchestra also aspires to enhance local music education and the city’s cultural appeal.
The structure of the orchestra, which includes seasoned professionals and young artists, speaks to its mission of fostering talent and providing artists with a pathway to perform for their hometown audience.
