Mercadona Spain announces new opening hours from September 1

The Valencian chain will revert to winter hours from the start of next month

It seems like only yesterday that Spain’s favourite supermarket extended its opening hours for the summer, giving us later closing times and the options of a leisurely Sunday shopping trip. But autumn is around the corner and as a result, Mercadona stores across Spain are pulling back their opening times from September 1.

To deal with the high-season influx, the Valencian chain has kept its doors open until 10pm from Monday to Saturday in busy tourist areas like Andalucía, Alicante, Catalonia, the Canary Islands, Murcia, Galicia and the Balearic Islands.

Likewise, since the end of June, around 300 stores up and down the country also treated us to Sunday shopping hours between 9am and 3pm.

That will all change from next Monday. Mercadona will end its extended summer hours and return to normal operations in all its supermarkets.

This means that stores will close at 9.30pm Monday through Saturday. Similarly, the Valencian chain has announced that it will no longer open on Sundays and holidays in order to provide its employees with breaks.

Since the change will be applied across the board, if you'd like to confirm the exact hours of your nearest store, you can do so through their website or mobile app, where you'll find an updated search engine for each of their 1,602 locations.
