Murcia set to become a key hub in Spain's green hydrogen network
A 44-kilometre pipeline crossing six municipalities will form part of a 2,600-kilometre national infrastructure project backed by the European Union
Cartagena and five other municipalities in the Region of Murcia are set to play a central role in Spain's energy future, after energy company Enagás launched the public participation process this week for a major green hydrogen pipeline project that will run through the heart of the region. The project involves 44 kilometres of hydrogen pipelines forming part of the so-called Levante Axis, specifically the Montesa-Cartagena section of the Spanish Hydrogen Backbone Network. The route will cross the municipalities of Cartagena, Murcia, San Javier, Torre Pacheco, La Unión and Los Alcázares, connecting renewable hydrogen production and consumption centres and creating a future export link to the rest of Europe.
The plans were presented at a meeting held at the San Esteban Palace between Enagás CEO Arturo Gonzalo and Regional President Fernando López Miras, along with other regional and company officials. Gonzalo described the launch of the participatory process as "another step in the development of a key infrastructure for Spain's energy transition," adding that the company aims to build the network "in collaboration with the local community," incorporating input from public bodies, businesses and citizens.
Cartagena stands to benefit particularly. The Escombreras Valley, already home to significant industrial activity, is expected to become one of the main energy hubs in southern Europe as green hydrogen investment grows. Enagás sees the combination of industrial capacity, logistics and future decarbonisation projects in the area as a major strategic asset.
One practical advantage of the planned route is that it will run largely parallel to existing natural gas infrastructure, reducing its environmental footprint and making it easier to integrate into the landscape.
The public participation plan for Murcia remains open until July 3.
During that period, two in-person sessions will be held, one in Cartagena and one in Murcia, alongside six information points spread across all six affected municipalities. Residents, businesses and organisations are all invited to contribute before the project reaches its final design stage.
The scale of the wider national project is considerable. The Spanish Hydrogen Backbone Network stretches approximately 2,600 kilometres across the country, has EU backing as a Project of Common Interest, and has already reached 13 autonomous communities and more than 500 municipalities since the participatory process began in April 2025.
Across Spain, the development of the hydrogen economy is estimated to contribute more than €32 billion to national GDP and support around 81,000 jobs during construction and commissioning.
For Murcia, it represents a significant opportunity to consolidate Cartagena's industrial standing and secure a place within the major European energy corridors of the decades ahead.
