New Mercadona in Cabo de Palos set for summer opening as major retail revamp takes shape
Modern store and wider commercial development aim to breathe new life into Las Dunas area
Shoppers in Cabo de Palos could soon have a brand-new supermarket on their doorstep, with the new Mercadona store on track to open between May and June 2026, just in time for the busy summer season.Construction is now in its final stages, with work progressing as planned on the site in the Las Dunas shopping area. The new store will replace the existing supermarket with a larger, more modern and more versatile space, designed to improve both the shopping experience and day-to-day operations.
The development also reflects Mercadona’s broader approach in recent months, combining expansion with a focus on supporting local communities, including initiatives to redistribute surplus food to families in need.
The project represents a significant investment of more than €5.2 million and covers a total built area of 13,277 square metres. The layout has been carefully designed across multiple levels. The ground floor, which will house the main shopping area along with storage, cold rooms and loading facilities, will span 4,168 square metres. Above that, a smaller first floor of 337 square metres will be used for staff areas, including changing rooms and a break room, as well as terraces for machinery.
Below ground, a large basement of 8,700 square metres will provide additional space, helping the store operate efficiently, especially during peak periods.
Parking has also been a key part of the design. There will be 235 spaces within the complex, including bays for people with reduced mobility and electric vehicle charging points. Outside, a further 90 spaces will be available.
Beyond the supermarket itself, the development is expected to give a much-needed boost to the wider Las Dunas area, which has faced ongoing structural issues and partial closures in recent years. Plans include space for four larger commercial units, likely to be restaurants or shops, along with around 60 smaller units aimed at a mix of local businesses.
The project forms part of a wider effort to modernise Mercadona stores and improve facilities for both customers and staff.
The regeneration of this area began to move forward in September 2025, when the Ayuntamiento granted the first building permits after years of inactivity. The site had remained stalled for more than two decades before finally being unlocked through updated urban planning.
Alongside the supermarket, initial plans also include a fast food restaurant and a service station, adding to what is expected to become a more vibrant and functional commercial hub.
For residents and visitors alike, the countdown is now on to a summer opening that promises not just a new place to shop, but a fresh start for one of Cabo de Palos’ long-neglected commercial áreas.
