October 24: Dog and cat adoption fair in Cartagena
Dogs and cats from local charities are waiting for forever homes at La Rambla Park

Anyone thinking of welcoming a dog or cat into their home can meet plenty of hopeful candidates on Saturday October 24, when La Rambla Park in Cartagena hosts a free adoption fair from 10am until 5pm, right next to the dog park.
The fair was due to take place earlier but was put back to Saturday because of the orange weather warning for rain issued by the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet). It’s being organised by the Animal Welfare Department of Cartagena City Council together with ANIMUR and local animal protection associations, and the idea is to bring people who’d like to adopt face to face with animals looking for a home, while also explaining how responsible adoption works.
Visitors can chat with volunteers and representatives from the participating groups, and the day starts at 10am with a police dog parade. A second parade follows with seven animal welfare organisations, each bringing three dogs, including the council’s own Domestic Animal Shelter (CATAD), and the stories of the animals and how they were rescued will be told to help potential adopters find the right match.
Attendees can join in too, with a participatory parade split into categories and prizes from sponsors. There will also be talks on adoption and therapy animals along with educational activities for children.
Cat lovers haven’t been forgotten, as six feline associations will be on hand to share information about their animals and how cat colonies are managed, and ANIMUR will have its own area for details on community cats and their care.
Local shops and small businesses are supporting the fair, as are Jimbee Cartagena Costa Cálida, whose players will take part in activities through the day, and FarmaHigiene, which is providing prizes. The event forms part of the collaboration agreement between the council and ANIMUR to run animal protection actions, awareness campaigns and programmes that promote responsible adoption.
