Spain is the destination of choice for more Europeans this Easter as global tensions rise
The Balearic and Canary Islands, along with mainland resorts, are reporting higher bookings from the UK and Germany

Spain is looking at what could be one of its busiest Easter seasons in years as holidaymakers across Europe change their plans. Rising tensions in the Middle East have made destinations closer to the conflict, like Turkey and Cyprus, fall out of favour. Instead, travellers are turning to places that feel safe and familiar, and Spain is proving a popular choice. From the Balearic and Canary Islands to coastal resorts on the mainland, more people are booking trips here than at the same time last year.
Mallorca is leading the way. British bookings have jumped by around 40% in recent weeks, while the Canary Islands have seen an increase of 16%. The island has become a trusted destination for tourists who want sun and sea without worrying about instability elsewhere in the region. Germany also brings in many visitors, and together with the UK, these two countries are behind Spain’s strong start to the season. Hotels are almost all open and ready to welcome guests, and many operators say the optimism on the islands is the strongest they have felt since before the pandemic.
Balancing rising bookings with inflation
The higher numbers show that travellers are understandably thinking differently about where to spend their holidays. Travellers are avoiding areas closer to potential conflict, which has left traditional eastern Mediterranean destinations with fewer bookings and more cancellations. Spain is benefiting as people look for a place with sun, culture, and of course beautiful beaches. The rise in visitors is also helping local businesses, from restaurants and shops to wineries, museums, and smaller cultural venues.
At the same time, the sector is keeping a close eye on the costs of this increased business. Inflation, rising prices for everyday goods, and volatile fuel costs are affecting hotel profits and the cost of flights. Operators are aware that visitor numbers alone are not enough, keeping trips affordable and ensuring a high-quality experience for guests is equally important.
Hotels and local businesses are ready and looking forward to a busy Easter season, but only time will show if the rise in visitor numbers translates to higher profits. The next few weeks will also test government plans for sustainable tourism, with the return of possible pre-pandemic figures. It could reignite debates over mass tourism and anti-tourist feeling. Spain is entering a period that will show just how well its tourism industry can balance growing demand with long-term planning and local concerns.
