Spain will extend cost of living support as fuel and other prices continue to rise

Current support measures expire on September 30 as the government prepares to decide what will continue from October

Families across Spain could receive further help with rising living costs from October as the government works on extending its current support measures. The existing package of measures is due to expire on September 30, with discussions now underway over which forms of support should continue from October 1.

The talks come as prices are rising again. Inflation reached 4.3% in August, its highest level since February 2023, while fuel and lubricants for personal vehicles were 23.8% more expensive than a year earlier.

Petrol and diesel prices have also jumped sharply in recent weeks. Over a 15-day period, the average price of 95-octane petrol increased from €1.774 to €1.911 per litre, a rise of 7.7%. Diesel went from €1.773 to €1.895 per litre, up 6.9%.

The government is looking at extending existing assistance for families and businesses, with particular attention being given to transport and the agri-food sectors because higher costs in these areas can feed through to other parts of the economy.

Further details are expected to emerge over the coming days as ministers assess which measures should remain in place after September 30.

The pressure is growing because prices could rise further. Economic research organisation Funcas forecasts inflation of 4.9% in September, with the rate expected to remain above 4% in the following months, largely because of energy costs.

For households, the key question is what support will actually be available from October. The current measures remain in place until the end of September, but the government has not yet confirmed the final package that will replace or extend them.

The situation is therefore expected to become clearer before the September 30 deadline, with any new measures coming into effect from October 1.
