Supermarket giant opens 100 new stores in Spain while others are shutting down
Alcampo recently delivered the shock news that it will be forced to close 25 locations across Spain

There’s been a major shift in how we do our shopping, with most people these days opting to buy the majority of their groceries and day-to-day items online and nipping to smaller convenience stores to fill the gap. As a result, household names like Alcampo are being forced to downsize. But there’s one supermarket giant that seems to be bucking this trend: Carrefour.
French chain Carrefour announced on Monday June 9 that it is ramping up operations in Spain with plans to open 100 new stores before the end of 2025, creating more than 700 jobs. This news has come just weeks after Alcampo, also originally from France, confirmed it would be axing roughly the same number of employees and shutting 25 supermarkets up and down the country.
So while the Auchan Retail brand flounders, Carrefour will boast more than 1,600 outlets before 2025 is out, with no plans to stop there.
The company currently has 1,500 stores in Spain, of which 200 are hypermarkets and almost 1,100 are Carrefour Express convenience stores.
By the time we get to the half-way mark of the year, Carrefour will have opened no fewer than 46 new supermarkets.
Recent openings include innovative formats, such as Carrefour City in high-traffic tourist areas, with three stores in Madrid, as well as locations in rural areas, such as Son Bou in Menorca, or in emblematic locations, such as the old San Fernando winery in Jerez or the historic Mercat des Claustre in Mahón.
Between 2019 and 2024, Carrefour opened 691 stores, representing an investment of €150 million and the creation of 3,500 jobs.
In 2024, Carrefour completed the integration of the 47 Supercor stores acquired from El Corte Inglés, adapting them to the Carrefour Market, Carrefour Express and Supeco formats, mainly in the communities of Madrid, Catalonia, Andalucía, the Balearic Islands and the Valencian Community.
