Teen, 17, drowns off coast of Aguilas after getting caught in strong surf

A 17-year-old boy has tragically died at Los Taray-Matalentisco beach in Águilas after getting caught in a swell of large, powerful waves.

The 112 Region of Murcia Emergency Coordination Centre received several frantic calls from witnesses reporting a swimmer having difficulty getting out of the water at around 5pm on Sunday June 18.

Another bather attempted to rescue the teen in distress, but the surf proved too strong, and they were unable to reach him.

Immediately lifeguards from the Águilas Civil Protection Plan Copla by land, and by sea with a boat, rushed to the point where both swimmers bathers were.

They were joined by a Local Police patrol and two ambulances. A helicopter from the Directorate General for Public Safety and Emergencies was also on standby with the Air Rescue Group of Specialists from the Fire and Rescue Consortium of the Region of Murcia on board.

The would-be rescuer was able to get out of the water safely unaided, and lifeguards managed to reach the tragic teen who was unconscious by this point.

They got him to the shore and began CPR before medics took over and continued with advanced resuscitation techniques. Sadly, the teen was unresponsive and declared dead at the scene.

Last week, a man, 60, drowned in Cabo Roig, Orihuela Costa, a month after a 70-year-old male perished at the nearby Playa Flamenca.
