Torrevieja Greenway set for huge €77,000 repair project

Plans will cover the full 6.7km route with work aimed at making it safer and more comfortable for walkers and cyclists

Torrevieja’s popular Greenway is set for a major overhaul after the City Council awarded a €77,129 contract to draw up plans for the repair and improvement of the entire 6.7-kilometre route.

The Greenway follows the former railway line between Albatera and Torrevieja and has become a popular route for walking, cycling, outdoor exercise and sustainable travel. It runs towards playa del Acequión and alongside Torrevieja’s famous Pink Lagoon, linking urban areas with the surrounding natural landscape.

The section covered by the project starts at kilometre 0 beside the Salt Museum and stretches for 6.7 kilometres to the CV-945 road.

The first part of the route has separate surfaces for different users, with an asphalt section for cyclists and a paved area for pedestrians. From around kilometre 3.4, the route becomes a single compacted-earth track which passes through a reed-filled area providing shelter for local wildlife.

The aim of the planned work is to restore the route and make it safer and more comfortable for people travelling on foot or by bicycle. The largely flat nature of the Greenway makes it suitable for both everyday journeys and recreational activities.

The new project will have to address four main areas, including improvements to the public space and surrounding landscape, social integration and participation, sustainability and environmental considerations, as well as the different activities carried out along the route.

There are also several practical issues that need to be addressed before the repair work can go ahead. The technical plans will examine land ownership along the route and its relationship with the Natural Resources Management Plan for the La Mata and Torrevieja Lagoons Natural Park.

The latest contract follows an earlier step in the process dating back to February 2024, when Torrevieja’s Local Government Board approved the tender for the project design and construction management.

Once the two-month design period has been completed, the plans will set out exactly what work is required to repair and improve the Greenway, paving the way for the subsequent construction work.
