Where to find the best British fish and chip shops in Benidorm
Costa Blanca's tourist capital boasts a tasty catch of restaurants that serve up this typical British dish
Tourism accounts for a whopping 40% of Benidorm's turnover, making it arguably the Costa Blanca's tourist capital. Every year, tens of thousands of UK holidaymakers spend their well-earned breaks in the resort, enticed by the sun, glorious coastline and endless attractions.
In fact, UK tourism is such an important part of Benidorm's fabric that an entire neighbourhood is referred to by the locals as the 'English zone', where the proliferation of British pubs and venues far outnumbers the Spanish.
This is an area that covers a large number of streets inland from Levante beach, Avenida Europa to Rincón de Loix, and along with other central areas, is home to a great selection of restaurants offering typical British dishes.
One of the most common, and popular, is of course battered fish and chips.
Here's a list of six of the best chippies to try out during your stay in Benidorm.
1. Daily Catch. This is a fryer that specialises in fish and chips and other British cuisine, although it serves all kinds of battered fish and seafood. It is located in the middle of Avenida de Alcoy on the front line of Levante beach.
2. Northern Sole. This restaurant is located in the old town area, next to the Paseo de la Carretera (or, as many tourists know it, the Calle del Coño). Although the sign at the entrance advertises fish and chips, the eaterie offers a varied menu that includes meats and fish of all kinds.
3. Ray's 2 Fish and Chips. This is one of the best known chippies in Benidorm, not only because of the number of positive reviews, but also because of its location in Avenida Mediterraneo, just opposite the English area. It's a small corner place with affordable prices.
4. The Penny Farthing. Also in the English area, this time in the Rincón de Loix (Calle Derramador), the restaurant boasts a terrace renowned for its breakfasts, although they also serve typical British food including fish and chips.
5. Refuel Cafe Bar. This eaterie differs from the previous ones in that it is in Calle San Pedro, on the Poniente beach. More specifically, above the recently refurbished Elche park, where there are several English places scattered around. It has good reviews, a large terrace and sea views.
6. Freiduría Los Peces. This restaurant is not British-run, but if you're looking for battered fish in Benidorm, it's worth of visit. Located very close to the Guillermo Amor municipal stadium (next to the car park where the street market is set up in Colonia Madrid), it's a traditional fried fish restaurant, with a few other dishes also on the menu.
