74-year-old motorist arrested after driving the wrong way for 12 miles on the AP-7 in Cartagena

The same man had been arrested three days earlier for a similar offence on a motorway in Valencia

A 74-year-old man has been arrested by the Guardia Civil after driving 20 kilometres in the wrong direction on the AP-7 motorway in the municipality of Cartagena. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of the morning, posed a serious danger to the lives and safety of other road users.

The traffic control centre received multiple emergency calls reporting a vehicle travelling against the flow of traffic along the AP-7. In response, the Traffic Headquarters of the Guardia Civil deployed several patrol units from the Cartagena Detachment to locate the vehicle and manage the situation.

The vehicle was spotted at kilometre 799 of the motorway, heading towards Alicante. Officers quickly began slowing traffic to reduce the risk of collision and were able to bring the situation under control. The car was eventually intercepted and safely stopped on the hard shoulder.

The driver, a man aged 74, refused to take a breathalyser test. He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of two offences against road safety: reckless driving and refusing to undergo an alcohol test.

Further investigation revealed that the man had been detained just three days earlier for an identical offence when he was found driving the wrong way on a motorway in the province of Valencia.
