British tourist gives birth outside hotel during Spanish blackout

A heroic hotel receptionist helped deliver the premature infant on a Malaga street

Monday April 28 is a day that will be hard for anyone to forget. A massive electricity blackout wiped out power and communication across Spain and the unprecedented event sadly claimed the lives of at least five people. However, even on the darkest days miracles can and do happen, and that’s just what occurred on the Costa del Sol, where a young hotel receptionist's bravery and quick thinking saved the day.

At the height of the blackout, Arturo, a 40-year-old receptionist at the Puente Real Hotel in Torremolinos, Malaga, sprang into action to save the life of a premature baby born outside the hotel.

The drama unfolded when a 20-year-old British tourist, just 30 weeks pregnant, arrived at the reception in severe pain and distress. With the ambulance delayed, Arturo, who had only been on the job for a month, took charge, drawing on his first aid training to assist with the birth.

With still no sign of the ambulance, the baby boy was born, but he wasn’t breathing. Arturo refused to give up on the tiny infant and began performing CPR. By the time medics arrived, the receptionist had cut the umbilical cord and brought the child back to life.

The National Police have confirmed that the young mother is doing well and that the baby remains stable in the neonatal ICU of the Málaga Maternal Hospital.

This unforgettable birth in the dark will no doubt be etched in the memories of all involved.
