Butane cylinder price edges up again for households across Spain
A small increase takes the regulated price to €15.58, following higher transport and raw material costs
The price of a traditional butane gas cylinder has gone up again in Spain, bringing an end to the brief relief many households felt late last year. From this Tuesday, the maximum retail price of a standard butane cylinder has risen by 0.7%, setting the new price at €15.58.The increase was confirmed in a resolution published in the Official State Gazette (BOE), which sets the regulated price for bottled liquefied petroleum gas used by millions of homes across Spain.
According to sources from the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, the rise is mainly down to higher costs behind the scenes. “Freight has increased by 5.1% and raw materials by 3.8%, while the euro has also depreciated slightly against the dollar,” the ministry sources explained.
Although the rise is relatively modest, it will still be felt by many older residents and rural households who rely on bottled gas for cooking, hot water and heating, particularly in areas not connected to the natural gas network.
Although the cost has risen again in this latest review, since the last one in November, the current regulated price of €15.58 is still lower than it was last summer, when price movements saw butane prices fall by five percent to €16.27.
Unlike electricity or natural gas, the price of bottled LPG sold in containers between 8 and 20 kilos, which includes the familiar orange butane cylinder, is not deregulated. Instead, it is reviewed every two months, always on the third Tuesday of the month, by the Directorate General for Energy Policy and Mines.
Each review takes into account several factors. These include the international market price of raw materials such as butane and propane, transport costs and changes in the euro to dollar exchange rate. To avoid sharp swings, any price increase or decrease is capped at 5%. If costs rise or fall beyond that limit, the difference is carried over to future reviews.
Bottled LPG is made up mainly of butane and remains a key energy source in many towns and urban centres, especially where homes cannot be connected to the gas grid. For many residents, it continues to be a practical alternative, even as prices slowly fluctuate with global markets.
While this week’s increase is small, consumers will be watching closely to see what the next review brings.
