Carlos Alcaraz defeats Novak Djokovic to win Australian Open final

The 22-year-old Spaniard completes his Grand Slam collection and becomes the youngest player in history to win all four majors

Carlos Alcaraz has written his name into tennis history after defeating Novak Djokovic in the final of the Australian Open, claiming the only Grand Slam title missing from his career and lifting his seventh major trophy.

The 22-year-old from Murcia overcame the Serbian legend 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, 7-5 in a gripping final that lasted three hours and four minutes. Djokovic narrowly missed the chance to become the oldest Grand Slam champion in history and to secure a record 25th major title.

With this victory, achieved at 22 years and 272 days of age, Alcaraz becomes the youngest player ever to win all four Grand Slam tournaments. He joins an elite group that includes Fred Perry, Donald Budge, Roy Emerson, Rod Laver, Andre Agassi, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Djokovic himself.

Alcaraz also surpasses Nadal’s previous record, set at the 2010 US Open at the age of 24, and becomes only the second Spanish player to win the Australian Open, following Nadal’s triumphs in 2009 and 2022.
