Road improvement work continues on the motorways around Murcia
Large investments have been made in order to improve safety on many main roads in the Region
The Regional Ministry of Public Works and Infrastructure is carrying out improvement works on the RM-2 regional motorway and the RM-D14 road, which connects the municipality of Águilas with the AP-7 motorway. The works have required large investments of over 1.6 million euros in total.
Primarily, the works are focused around road safety through the improvement of the road surfaces that can suffer in the heat of Murcia, especially during the summer when the road has to deal with a larger number of people driving on them.
The Director General of Roads, Francisco Carrillo, who visited the RM-D14 road improvements, was keen to stress that the work is looking good and is going ahead at a good rate. The work on the RM-D14 road is taking place over a three-kilometre long section, with the aim of improving the state of the road and ensuring the safety of drivers, as previously mentioned.
Moreover, a central waiting lane will be included in the works, at the access to the Los Geranios housing estate, which requires an extension of the road platform by 350 metres.
The improvements will also include cleaning and profiling of the ditches in order to restore their drainage capabilities. Furthermore, road signs will be renewed in order to allow for better visibility and use by drivers to increase safety even further.
Over at the RM-2 regional motorway site, the work is well underway and in full swing, being 35% complete already.
Firstly, attention was paid to the road that runs through the municipality of Fuente Álamo. With as many as 16,000 vehicles using that section of road everyday it was paramount for the improvements of the road to begin there.
The work there has included raising the road surface with two layers of 5-centimetre-thick agglomerate, milling in the most deteriorated areas, and the reinforcement of safety elements, such as bionda barriers and berms.
Moreover, the signage on that part of the motorway has also been improved and renewed, and joints have been replaced on the existing bridges in affected areas.
Finally, work on the remaining sections of the motorway will resume after Christmas in order to not interfere with the holiday traffic. After it resumes in the new year, the work will then take three months to be completed.
