The Region of Murcia will create 16,000 jobs a year between 2024 and 2026

The Hispalink group believe that the regional economy will grow above average and close the gap on the rest of Spain in 2024

According to forecasts from the Hispalink team of the UMU and the Chair of Competitiveness, the Region of Murcia will generate 16,000 jobs annually during the three-year period from 2024-2026. Moreover, it is believed that the growth of the Region will be above the national average and will mean that Murcia will close the financial gap between itself and other regions in Spain.

A recent report shows that the economy of Spain has seen an increase of 3.1% in 2024, because of private consumption, exports and the containment of prices. The Region of Murcia is expected to continue this trend and show an average growth of 2.7% between 2024 and 2026, which is mainly supported by the services sector and the pull of tourism.

Industry and agriculture, however, are likely to have a more modest performance alongside the construction sector, which has suffered in recent years. The good performance of the regional economy is also encouraged by public spending, which will contribute 70% of the 3.1% growth forecast for 2024.

Many view growth through public spending as false growth, because it comes through channels of taxes and therefore does not benefit the average person. The Region of Murcia and Spain more widely have a problem related to slow growth in the econonmy when not coming from the Central Government or the European Union.

However, the cancellation of debt in the communities most affected by underfunding is one of the commitments adopted by the Central Government at the Conference of Presidents held last Friday in Santander. The Region of Murcia is one of the communities that would benefit the most because it is so heavily dependent on financing from the government.

Murica is second on the list of autonomous communities with the highest debt burden in the country. The debt stands at this moment at 32.2% of GDP. At the end of the second quarter of the year, the community owed 13.235 billion.

In relation to the 16,000 jobs which will come in the next couple of years, most of the roles will be in the service sector. These jobs are usually both badly paid and precarious and the report warns that with the growing economy, the Region must also increase productivity otherwise nothing will come from the growth that has been forecasted.
