Torrevieja port promenade reopens after €6.5 million revamp

The Levante breakwater promenade is open again just in time for the holiday crowds

Torrevieja's port promenade along the Levante breakwater has reopened to the public just in time for Easter, following a €6.5m renovation that finished more than eight months behind schedule.

The works covered 1,247 linear metres of promenade, replacing the old wooden plank decking that had been in place since 1999 with new engineered wood paving, improved pedestrian areas and upgraded safety features.

A new prefabricated concrete bench running the length of the promenade doubles as a breakwater, and a colour-changing RGB lighting system funded by European money now illuminates the seafront each evening, cycling through the colours of the Spanish flag along 1,300 metres of coastline.

Getting there is still a bit of a work in progress though. The main access point from the Hombre del Mar monument remains a construction site, meaning pedestrians currently have to pick their way along an improvised path shared with vehicles heading to the Marina Salinas car park, trucks bound for the fish market and construction machinery.

That situation isn't going to be resolved for at least another four months, with a separate €3m contract covering the new ramp and access works still ongoing.

The project had a complicated road to get here, taking the best part of five years to obtain the necessary authorisations due to the promenade sitting on Port Authority land, and the entire tender process having to be repeated at one point after an issue with contaminated bids.

On a more positive note, the long-awaited Paseo del Mar leisure centre at the port is now expected to open between late April and early May. The waterfront complex covers more than 20,000m² with 27 retail and hospitality units across 8,500m², around 80% of which are already leased.

A multiplex cinema and American-style bowling alley are among the attractions expected to feature when it finally opens its doors.
