Campoamor residents demand urgent action over beach access and deteriorating conditions

Residents, holidaymakers and beachgoers joined a protest demanding improvements to one of Orihuela Costa's most popular beaches

Hundreds of residents, holidaymakers and visitors gathered at Barranco Rubio beach in Campoamor on Saturday to demand urgent action over broken beach lifts and the deteriorating condition of one of Orihuela Costa's most popular stretches of coastline.

The demonstration, organised by the Campoamor Residents' Association (AVA Campoamor) and other local groups, took place outside the Miraver building and attracted a large crowd calling on Orihuela City Council to tackle problems that campaigners say have been ignored for years.

During the event, the association's vice-president read a manifesto outlining the long-running battle to have the beach access lifts repaired. The lifts provide a vital link between the upper part of Campoamor and Barranco Rubio beach, particularly for older people, families with young children and anyone with reduced mobility.

After the speech, the crowd responded with prolonged applause before voicing their frustration with a collective boo, highlighting growing anger over the lack of progress.

Campaigners also raised concerns about the condition of the beach itself. They say standing water on the sand is creating muddy patches and unpleasant smells, while poor maintenance is damaging both the environment and Campoamor's reputation as a tourist destination.

AVA Campoamor said it has repeatedly raised the issues with Orihuela City Council and recently submitted fresh proposals in the hope of speeding up a solution.

Alongside the demonstration, the association continued collecting signatures in support of its campaign. More than 700 people have now backed the petition, which will be presented to the council as residents continue to push for action.

According to the association, Saturday's turnout sent a clear message that residents want urgent action to restore full access to Barranco Rubio beach and improve conditions for everyone who uses it.
