Missing Costa Blanca yacht found and captain rescued off coast of Algeria

The skipper of the sailing boat that disappeared on January 15 while sailing to Guardamar has been located in Algerian waters, safe and sound

The sailor of the missing yacht ‘Admirante’ has been located alive and well, along with his vessel, in Algerian waters, just a couple of days after the search was called off.

The sailing boat disappeared on January 15, 2026 in the waters between Gandía and Guardamar del Segura, but has now been located by an aircraft belonging to Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency.

It was reported by the Alicante Harbour Master’s Office and Salvamento Marítimo marine rescue that the sailboat and its occupant, aged 69, were located in Algerian waters, 53 miles northeast of the Algerian city of Béjaïa. A merchant ship, Thor Confidence, has picked up the bedraggled captain and will take him to the port of Algeciras on January 29.

The operation was coordinated with the Spanish Navy’s COVAM (Maritime Action Operations and Surveillance Centre) and the National Rescue Coordination Centre, according to the Directorate General of the Merchant Navy.

It comes after the search was called off on January 24, following nine days of searching by Maritime Rescue in the Spanish SAR zone, with radio alerts and contact with the Algerian authorities remaining active.
